Behr Paint Selects Grounded as Its 2027 Color of the Year

Homeowners look to set their own personalized tone when they select the colors for the interiors and exteriors of their houses. For many people right now, a natural look is creating a relaxing space for people looking for a haven away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. BEHR Paint’s color team has certainly taken note of that sensibility with Grounded, BEHR’s 2027 Color of the Year.

Described as a “dimensional shade positioned between olive and moss, anchored by subtle brown undertones,” Grounded offers a warm look to the home. Kayla Kratz, head of color at BEHR, says that Grounded reflects a broader shift toward warmer, more dimensional color as consumers look for spaces that feel comfortable, personal and lived-in.

“Grounded is a mossy olive green with subtle brown undertones that give the color warmth, depth and versatility,” Kratz notes. “Brighter daylight brings the moss and olive forward, while lower light reveals more of the brown undertone and creates a warmer, more enveloping expression.”

Kratz points out that selecting the next year’s color starts with observation.

“Our team tracks shifts across interiors, fashion, furniture, materials and finishes, alongside how people are living and what they want from their spaces,” Kratz says. “Once we identified the direction, we worked through dozens of formulations with the BEHR Color Lab to achieve a precise balance of moss, olive and subtle brown.

“Each component serves a purpose: moss brings vitality, olive carries warmth and the brown undertone adds earthy depth,” she adds. “The final formulation needed enough saturation to read unmistakably as green without becoming overly botanical or dark.”

Kratz notes that Grounded is a beautiful hue for both interiors and exteriors of homes.

“Inside the home, Grounded can shift with scale and application,” says Kratz. “Across four walls, the color feels immersive; on cabinetry, millwork or an island, Grounded takes on a more architectural presence. Warm wood, stone, leather, brass and aged metals reinforce the earthy character, while chrome, black metal and glass create a more contemporary contrast.

“For exteriors, the brown undertone helps Grounded remain balanced in full daylight,” Kratz adds. “The shade offers a colorful alternative to black, charcoal or brown on trim, shutters and doors and can also work across a larger exterior, where the green connects naturally with the surrounding landscape.”

In selecting Grounded, Kratz reports that the BEHR color team is reflecting on the continued influence of nature-derived color, but sees that direction becoming warmer, deeper and more expressive for 2027.

“Pale sages and restrained neutrals have played a major role in recent years; now mossy olives, warm browns, clays, muted reds and other dimensional hues are moving forward,” Kratz points out. “Grounded is what I think of as a ‘living neutral’ – easy to build a room around but with enough color and character to bring the space to life.

“Grounded’s moss and olive character reads unmistakably as green, while the subtle brown undertone creates enough earthy depth to work naturally alongside wood, stone, metal and a wide range of other finishes. The broader shift is toward comfort with more color and character,” Kratz notes.

For example, last year BEHR selected Hidden Gem, a jade-hued green, as its 2026 Color of the Year. Grounded continues the prominence of green while showcasing the color’s versatility.

“Grounded and Hidden Gem demonstrate how much range exists within the green family and why BEHR intentionally selected greens in consecutive years,” Kratz says. “Grounded, BEHR’s 2027 Color of the Year, moves between moss and olive, with subtle brown undertones that give the color a warmer, earthier character. By contrast, Hidden Gem, our 2026 selection, is a smoky jade with a cooler, more atmospheric blue-green quality.”

Actually, Grounded and Hidden Gem can be paired quite nicely.

“Used together, Grounded provides warmth and an organic foundation while Hidden Gem introduces a cooler counterpoint,” Kratz observes. “The relationship reflects the complexity found in nature, where greens with different temperatures, depths and undertones coexist rather than appearing as a single uniform hue.”

Grounded is one of seven shades in the BEHR 2027 Color Trends Palette – Coastal Beige, Wheat Grass, Environmental, Denim Light, Smokey Claret, Sarsaparilla, and Mozart – which Kratz notes combines BEHR’s forward-looking color direction with seven archival shades reintroduced from the BEHR vault.

“The full collection spans sun-warmed neutrals, earthy greens, softened clays, atmospheric blues and deeper accents, with Grounded serving as the anchor,” Kratz says. “Reintroducing colors from the vault felt especially meaningful as BEHR marks ten years of Color of the Year. Color is cyclical, but a shade never returns in exactly the same design context. New materials, finishes, color combinations and applications can completely change how a familiar hue is experienced. The 2027 palette explores that idea of reinterpretation, recognizing colors with enduring relevance and placing them into combinations that reflect how we want to live with color now.”

As part of its 10^th anniversary of its Color of the Year program, BEHR donated $250,000 to Habitat for Humanity, reflecting its shared belief in the importance of home.

Kratz says that Grounded speaks to a larger change BEHR sees in how consumers are using color to create comfort at home.

“For several years, the visual language of calm centered heavily on whites, beiges, grays and restrained neutrals. For 2027, that definition is shifting to richer hues with greater depth, materiality and personality,” says Kratz. “Grounded captures that evolution through a mossy olive green balanced by subtle brown undertones. The formulation gives the color enough presence to stand on its own while remaining flexible enough to serve as a foundation across a room. For me, what feels most defining about this moment is that calm doesn’t have to mean colorless. Comfort is becoming more expressive.”
